The actuator connects the ignition lock cylinder to the electrical ignition switch inside the steering column. If the original actuator becomes worn or broken, turning the key may no longer operate the ignition switch correctly.

Common Symptoms of a Failed Jeep Ignition Actuator

A worn or broken ignition actuator may cause the ignition key to turn without operating the electrical ignition switch correctly.


  • Ignition key turns but the engine does not crank
  • No electrical response when the key is turned
  • Intermittent starting
  • Unusually loose movement at the ignition key
  • Accessories fail to operate in the correct key position


These symptoms can also be caused by the ignition switch, lock cylinder, starter circuit or vehicle wiring. The existing components should be inspected before ordering.
